I have a sore throat for this holiday weekend, bummer! But I am pleased to announce I’ve started a new series of paintings called “Coveted”. Here is the idea behind the series:

“Coveted” is a series of paintings on wishful thinking. Each painting in the series refers to something I wish I had, whether it be something necessary, frivolous, or implied. The loose illustrative style of the Coveted series reminds me of lazy classroom days spent doodling in my notebook, wishing I were somewhere else.

The first painting in the series is called “Social Skills”. Kind of laughable, but I really do covet better conversation skills, etc. Here she is:

Or rather, the great light north. 24 hour sunlight! It was fantastic. Mark is from Alaska and we love to visit his family whenever we can, unfortunately due to the distance we don’t get to go as much as we’d like. However this last week was amazing and we were glad to spend time with them.

We toured the Musk Ox farm too, officially called the Large Animal Research Station (L.A.R.S.)

We also visited the Ice Musuem, a motel made of ice! You can rent a chamber there to the tune of $600 per night, though they said only 3 people have made it the whole night without fleeing to warmer sleeping quarters. I can’t blame them, it was 20 degrees and the 45 minute tour seemed pretty long. At the end we got to sit at the ice bar and drink appletinis out of glasses made of ice! The stools were covered in caribou hide to keep you from sticking, it was fantastic.

Brr. Makes me cold just looking at those pictures. So fun though, the whole trip.

On a business note, I have a whole box of paintings about six months old that have never been on the site. They’ve made their way up from a show in Seattle all the way here, so as soon as I pick them up they’ll be on the site.

Good morning. We had a lovely weekend here getting ready for our upcoming trip to Alaska. In the midst of it I received these two paintings back from an art show at the fabulous Soda Gallery in Texas. I don’t usually do portraits of famous people, but the theme of the show was rock ‘n roll, and David Bowie’s face made a great canvas.

I actually made a set of these, six I think, and these are the last two remaining. Since these are somewhat out of the norm for me I’m going to sell them in a way that’s out of the norm.

My husband and I share a creative space in our house and since we’re coming up on our two month mark of living there we’d like to start organizing it. So I did a little looking on Flickr, though I have to admit it was less about research than my enjoyment of seeing where people make stuff.

Well, we had a fantastic anniversary yesterday. Thank you for all the well wishes. We had a picnic at a site that was once a Dutch farm, now converted to a park. One of the piglets almost ended up in my purse, which would have easily transported it inconspicuously enough to our van, and ultimately to our house where it would have grown up wearing t-shirts and watching tv with us. Seriously cute.

Today is our five year wedding anniversary. Five years ago on this day Mark and I drove from our home in Montana to Sacred Grounds, a gas station/drive through coffee window offering weddings in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It may seem a slapdash way to get married, but I can assure you it was very planned. We started off with the idea of a regular wedding, got stressed out and moved on to a Haiwaii wedding with just the two of us. When that got too stressful the Sacred Grounds idea started to sound pretty ideal. And it was- stress free and so much fun. We were married while two customers struggled with the defective ATM a few feet away, eventually elevating their complaints to a heated customer service call. Afterwards we got free coffee, good deal!

We then drove to Spokane, WA and played two No-Fi Soul Rebellion shows. At the second show we had everyone gather around for photos, and kudos to the soundman who showed his ass during the photos. Our parents loved that. We then spent the night at a local journalist’s home, who interviewed us for our first appearance in a national music magazine, Skyscraper. He was extremely accommodating and let us sleep in his bed that night while he took the sagging couch in the living room. It was June and the heat was oppressive in the old upstairs apartment even late into the night. Exhausted, we turned out the lights and climbed into the flannel sheets (Yes. Flannel sheets. In June.). We spent a few moments laying there silently, emotionally and physically drained by the events of the day. I reached for Mark’s hand in the dark and I knew we were sharing a smile, even though I couldn’t see his face. We were radiantly happy. Then the cats came. Slowly at first- one, two, then three cats crept out from under the bed. They sniffed our heads and faces before settling into the nooks and crannies created by our flannel bedding, now sweltering in the summer night. Bellowing voices from the street below carried up to us as the bar patrons downstairs spilled into the street, keeping us late.

I wouldn’t change a thing.
